BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS

BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS

BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: So tell me, who are the Reach around Rodeo Clowns?

RARC: A group of guys who have never followed the rules. Now, We've LED a bunch of times, just never followed. We're ALWAYS first in the food line! We've been eating at gas stations in order to save up money to go on this tour.

BF: That's great, but why are you guys touring NOW?

RARC: Because, after 10 years, we finally finished our CD, Dark Days, Dark Nights. It was originally released on 8-track, and we didn’t sell a one! We heard there's this new technology called compact discs, so we recorded one of those.
Thought people might want to hear it live, so we're out here.

BF: Terrific. Has anybody taken notice of the album yet?

RARC: Yes. The reviews have been spectacular! Especially the ones we've written. No, really, check out the following reviews:

“It’s hard to ignore the most important aspect of The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns, their original music, which could not be duplicated by another band in either studio or the live show aspect. Out of the chockfull 19-song CD, there is truly not a bad song on the disc, and it can be listened to in its entirety, from song one, straight through to song 19. I can totally hear their songs included in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film, and The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns would fit the background application perfectly!”Fangoria Magazine Online

“Are you kidding? Out of the 400 and something bands we have heard in the last year the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns are our favorite. These guys are talented enough in my opinion to blow away anything on the modern scene. We want to do all that we can to spread the word. This album is spectacular!”

Moe Hillbilly, Editor

Twisted Hillbilly Magazine

this band actually delivers some excellent spaghetti-western/rockabilly influenced punk
and garage rock. Dark themes run through the 19 songs on this disc, with the band going
for power with crunchy guitars at times, while going for a more spooky vibe with twangy
reverb on others.
The Continental Magazine

"The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns live up to their name -- these magical, musical, hillbilly houndogs will reach around, pull out your heart, eat it and sing rainbows right back into your skull. The perfect tracks to listen to in the back of your pickup, with a jack in one hand, a blunt in the other, and a hot girl's cold corpse face down in the middle. Dark Days, Dark Nights is the only CD I play in my coffin! I'm dying to hear what they sing next!"

Robert "Corpsy" Rhine

Publisher/Deaditor-In-Chief ,Girls and Corpses Magazine

BF: How can you be heard before the release?

RARC: Go to www.lanarkrecords.net and see the videos. At our LA shows, we will have the videos playing behind us. It's gonna be quite the party.

BF: How many albums, 8 tracks, or CD's have you guys put out?

RARC: Five. Five copies of the same album. Actually, no, there have been 5 different releases: The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns, Whip It Out! Circuit Rider, Greatest Hits! and the brand new DARK DAYS, DARK NIGHTS. We also “released” 7 wives in that time. WE make Charlie Sheen look like Gandhi!

BF: Who have you worked with lately?

RARC: Al Kooper, Peter Noone, Charlie Gracie, and Eddie Angel. Some try to put us in the psychobilly genre, but we consider ourselves Rock N Roll. So we've always leaned toward those types of guys.

BF: How about producers? Has anybody taken notice?

RARC: Well, This album is co-produced and mixed by Tom “T- Bone” Edmunds. We brought him in at the end of the project, and he did a fantastic job. He deserves a Grammy for his work on this project!

BF: Where are you guys playing on this West Coast tour?

RARC: If you ask Ace, he says, “'Tonight. With myself. In the hotel room. In the dark. Once Quentin falls asleep.” The rest of the band understands the question and here's the schedule:

TOUR DATES FOR THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS

Wed April 27th @ Crepe Place in Santa Cruz Ca.

Thursday April 28th @ Caravan in San Jose Ca.

Fri April 29th @ Donny’s in Sonora Ca.

Sat April 30th @ Bombay’s in Redding Ca.

Sunday May 1st Audie's Olympic Tavern, Fresno

Wednesday May 4th Bombay's, Ventura, Ca.

Thursday May 5th the Cat Club, L.A., Ca.

Friday May 6 Juke Joint, Anaheim, Ca.

BF: OK guys, you sound like a lot of fun with a story to tell. Hey, you out there, make sure to check these guys out! Any last words, boys?

RARC: Fun. We’ll show you fun.

GRACIE PLAYS B B KINGS

The legendary Sixties icon Al Kooper held his annual birthday jam at BB King’s in NYC last Friday night, February 11th. Al’s birthday bash is always well attended, and this year was no exception with the line to get in a block and a half long! A true musical ambassador, Kooper hand selects a surprise lineup of special guests each year. Much to our delight here at Lanark Records, Al asked our very own R ”˜N’ R pioneer Charlie Gracie to perform. The bill was rounded out with outstanding sets by Jimmy Vivino, the bandleader for the Conan O’Brien Show, and by the Paul Thorn Band.

The atmosphere backstage bustled with the excitement of the event. Quentin and I chatted with Vavino. The subject turned to a Gretsch Reverend Horton Heat edition guitar.

Quentin asked, “So you like the Rev?”

“Sure, and I also like this other psychobilly band from 20 years ago, the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns.”

“We are the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns!” Quentin bellowed in his inimitable way.

“You gotta be kidding me!” Jimmy laughed with a look of delighted bewilderment on his face.

Quentin and I looked in amazement at one other. It was one of those magical moments in music that keep you going. We loaded Vavino up with our new record Dark Days, Dark Nights, our Greatest Hits! and The Owner’s Manual for Dark Days, Dark Nights, and, of course, a copy of the new Kooper/Jones produced CD to be released later this year.

“Can you play fast?” Jim asked. “Conan likes it fast.”

“Can we play fast? Of course we can! We’re the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns!”

The energy seemed to be everywhere backstage. Readying for his performance, Charlie joked, “You better get your sunglasses,” as he pulled a fluorescent green blazer from its tote.

That’s how it is with Gracie, always a joke, a heartfelt handshake, or a kind word. The magnitude of his star power is hard to overstate. Fast on his feet, quick with a smile, the seventy-five-year-old Gracie never sits down. He is one of the last of the great entertainers. He can do it all, and, if you have never seen Mr. Gracie perform, check www.charliegracie.com and catch a show.

Someone asks, “What do you need, Charlie?” Charlie’s pat answer, “Give me a mic, an amp, and a spotlight, and I’ll do the rest.”

And how he did it Friday night! Gracie had the crowd behind him the minute he took the stage. I have seen Charlie perform many times. I have watched him in the studio, and I have watched him rehearse a band. But Friday, that was something special. This five-foot six titan of entertainment played his hits “Fabulous” and “Butterfly” like they had just been released the day before, with an exuberance and panache that was riveting. Fifteen minutes into the show he had the crowd roaring with approval. With the strident leadership of Lanark’s Quentin Jones, the band matched Gracie’s energy again and again. Noteworthy was the Gracie-penned “All I Want to Do is Love You” from his upcoming album with its memorable, propulsive beat. Gracie brought the crowd to its feet with a rousing rendition of “Guitar Boogie”, showing off the guitar chops that have made him a hero to music lovers everywhere. The standing ovation that followed was well deserved. Gracie returned the favor with a genuine “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen” and waved good night, making for an entirely satisfying end to a great show by this original American rocker finally getting his due.

For Photos of the night and news on Charlie's upcoming CD produced by Al Kooper/Quentin Jones and three songs co produced by Tom T Bone Edmonds, visit www.lanarkrecords.net.

Ace Filipini
