BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS - March 2, 2011

BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS

BONGO FURY MAGAZINE: So tell me, who are the Reach around Rodeo Clowns?

RARC: A group of guys who have never followed the rules. Now, We've LED a bunch of times, just never followed. We're ALWAYS first in the food line! We've been eating at gas stations in order to save up money to go on this tour.

BF: That's great, but why are you guys touring NOW?

RARC: Because, after 10 years, we finally finished our CD, Dark Days, Dark Nights. It was originally released on 8-track, and we didn’t sell a one! We heard there's this new technology called compact discs, so we recorded one of those.
Thought people might want to hear it live, so we're out here.

BF: Terrific. Has anybody taken notice of the album yet?

RARC: Yes. The reviews have been spectacular! Especially the ones we've written. No, really, check out the following reviews:

“It’s hard to ignore the most important aspect of The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns, their original music, which could not be duplicated by another band in either studio or the live show aspect. Out of the chockfull 19-song CD, there is truly not a bad song on the disc, and it can be listened to in its entirety, from song one, straight through to song 19. I can totally hear their songs included in an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film, and The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns would fit the background application perfectly!”Fangoria Magazine Online

“Are you kidding? Out of the 400 and something bands we have heard in the last year the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns are our favorite. These guys are talented enough in my opinion to blow away anything on the modern scene. We want to do all that we can to spread the word. This album is spectacular!”

Moe Hillbilly, Editor

Twisted Hillbilly Magazine

this band actually delivers some excellent spaghetti-western/rockabilly influenced punk
and garage rock. Dark themes run through the 19 songs on this disc, with the band going
for power with crunchy guitars at times, while going for a more spooky vibe with twangy
reverb on others.
The Continental Magazine

"The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns live up to their name -- these magical, musical, hillbilly houndogs will reach around, pull out your heart, eat it and sing rainbows right back into your skull. The perfect tracks to listen to in the back of your pickup, with a jack in one hand, a blunt in the other, and a hot girl's cold corpse face down in the middle. Dark Days, Dark Nights is the only CD I play in my coffin! I'm dying to hear what they sing next!"

Robert "Corpsy" Rhine

Publisher/Deaditor-In-Chief ,Girls and Corpses Magazine

BF: How can you be heard before the release?

RARC: Go to www.lanarkrecords.net and see the videos. At our LA shows, we will have the videos playing behind us. It's gonna be quite the party.

BF: How many albums, 8 tracks, or CD's have you guys put out?

RARC: Five. Five copies of the same album. Actually, no, there have been 5 different releases: The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns, Whip It Out! Circuit Rider, Greatest Hits! and the brand new DARK DAYS, DARK NIGHTS. We also “released” 7 wives in that time. WE make Charlie Sheen look like Gandhi!

BF: Who have you worked with lately?

RARC: Al Kooper, Peter Noone, Charlie Gracie, and Eddie Angel. Some try to put us in the psychobilly genre, but we consider ourselves Rock N Roll. So we've always leaned toward those types of guys.

BF: How about producers? Has anybody taken notice?

RARC: Well, This album is co-produced and mixed by Tom “T- Bone” Edmunds. We brought him in at the end of the project, and he did a fantastic job. He deserves a Grammy for his work on this project!

BF: Where are you guys playing on this West Coast tour?

RARC: If you ask Ace, he says, “'Tonight. With myself. In the hotel room. In the dark. Once Quentin falls asleep.” The rest of the band understands the question and here's the schedule:

RARC: Fun. We’ll show you fun.

GRACIE PLAYS B B KINGS - February 18, 2011

The legendary Sixties icon Al Kooper held his annual birthday jam at BB King’s in NYC last Friday night, February 11th. Al’s birthday bash is always well attended, and this year was no exception with the line to get in a block and a half long! A true musical ambassador, Kooper hand selects a surprise lineup of special guests each year. Much to our delight here at Lanark Records, Al asked our very own R ‘N’ R pioneer Charlie Gracie to perform. The bill was rounded out with outstanding sets by Jimmy Vivino, the bandleader for the Conan O’Brien Show, and by the Paul Thorn Band.

The atmosphere backstage bustled with the excitement of the event. Quentin and I chatted with Vavino. The subject turned to a Gretsch Reverend Horton Heat edition guitar.

Quentin asked, “So you like the Rev?”

“Sure, and I also like this other psychobilly band from 20 years ago, the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns.”

“We are the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns!” Quentin bellowed in his inimitable way.

“You gotta be kidding me!” Jimmy laughed with a look of delighted bewilderment on his face.

Quentin and I looked in amazement at one other. It was one of those magical moments in music that keep you going. We loaded Vavino up with our new record Dark Days, Dark Nights, our Greatest Hits! and The Owner’s Manual for Dark Days, Dark Nights, and, of course, a copy of the new Kooper/Jones produced CD to be released later this year.

“Can you play fast?” Jim asked. “Conan likes it fast.”

“Can we play fast? Of course we can! We’re the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns!”

The energy seemed to be everywhere backstage. Readying for his performance, Charlie joked, “You better get your sunglasses,” as he pulled a fluorescent green blazer from its tote.

That’s how it is with Gracie, always a joke, a heartfelt handshake, or a kind word. The magnitude of his star power is hard to overstate. Fast on his feet, quick with a smile, the seventy-five-year-old Gracie never sits down. He is one of the last of the great entertainers. He can do it all, and, if you have never seen Mr. Gracie perform, check www.charliegracie.com and catch a show.

Someone asks, “What do you need, Charlie?” Charlie’s pat answer, “Give me a mic, an amp, and a spotlight, and I’ll do the rest.”

And how he did it Friday night! Gracie had the crowd behind him the minute he took the stage. I have seen Charlie perform many times. I have watched him in the studio, and I have watched him rehearse a band. But Friday, that was something special. This five-foot six titan of entertainment played his hits “Fabulous” and “Butterfly” like they had just been released the day before, with an exuberance and panache that was riveting. Fifteen minutes into the show he had the crowd roaring with approval. With the strident leadership of Lanark’s Quentin Jones, the band matched Gracie’s energy again and again. Noteworthy was the Gracie-penned “All I Want to Do is Love You” from his upcoming album with its memorable, propulsive beat. Gracie brought the crowd to its feet with a rousing rendition of “Guitar Boogie”, showing off the guitar chops that have made him a hero to music lovers everywhere. The standing ovation that followed was well deserved. Gracie returned the favor with a genuine “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen” and waved good night, making for an entirely satisfying end to a great show by this original American rocker finally getting his due.

BOB 'The Unfriendly' Rodeo Clown - October 27, 2010

BOB 'The Unfriendly' Rodeo Clown
comic book launches in GIRLS and CORPSES MAGAZINE with
illustrator JIM SMITH at the artistic reins.
Just in time for Halloween, Girls and Corpses Magazine has teamed up with Lanark Records and Quentin Jones (The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns) to premiere a sneak preview of their comic book, Bob 'The Unfriendly' Rodeo Clown.

"There is a new trend of bands releasing comic books to go with their album releases, often with the CD directly inside the comic book," explains Girls and Corpses Deaditor-In-Chief R.S Rhine, adding, "Quentin Jones is right on target by marketing his new CD in this manner."

"I knew Rhine would be the perfect person to write our comic book and shepherd it to print," explains Jones. Rhine, next brought in friend and renowned animator/illustrator Jim Smith (Ren & Stimpy co-creator) who was the perfect fit for this dark, funny comic.

"Jim Smith is one of the most revered animators working today," praises Rhine, "Smith's awesome work on Ren & Stimpy, Jimmy The Idiot Boy and Ripping Friends represents the pinnacle of classic animation style, which perfectly suits our comic book."

Bob "The Unfriendly" Rodeo Clown is about a middle management executive who loses his job, wife and family in this difficult economy. His life spirals into drinking and darkness. With job openings sparce, Bob finally finds a job with a local rodeo as a clown. But things take a horrible turn when Bob is gored and disfigured. Angry and bitter, Bob, goes on a rampage, seeking ultimate vengeance on those who have wronged him.

Clowns Update! - March 9, 2010

PRESS RELEASE – THE REACH AROUND RODEO CLOWNS

The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns are the East Coast Psychobilly pioneers. Formed in the grunge-infested Nineties, “The Clowns” began an impenetrable musical force that has continued mercilessly to this very moment, the band having just returned home with the rewards of their second West Coast tour in four months.

While in Los Angeles, The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns increased their involvement with their distributor Inner Knot/ADA (WEA) to include the duplication and promotion of their soon-to-be released rock narrative Dark Days, Dark Nights (Lanark Record) already hailed by Robert Rhine, Deaditor-in-Chief of Girls and Corpses magazine, as the most anticipated rock opus since The Who’s Tommy. The band will be featured in the Spring issue of Rhine’s titillating, controversial bikini girl/gore fest mag. The Clowns’ tale is currently being produced in CD, comic book/graphic novel, and mix-media formats. Movie plans are being made.

Horribly intriguing yet endlessly challenging the decay of the Modern World, Dark Days tells the lurid tale of the heartbroken, jobless Rodeo Clown Bob during his decent into a hellish, everyday killing spree. The antagonist turns protagonist when his last friend, a loyal American bulldog, finds Jesus in a backyard well. It is in this metaphor that The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns surprisingly offer hope for the people of America and, and in the process, to a larger world filled with more jobless, homeless, and hungry. The CD is co-produced by the band’s founder Quentin Jones and Tom “T-Bone” Edmonds, whose work is currently detailed in Mix magazine.

The Clowns are touring now in support of their GREATEST HITS! (Lanark) throughout the South and the Southwest. The band will arrive in Los Angeles for an April 17th showcase during the celebration of the Spring Issue of Girls and Corpses at Hollywood’s best-kept secret The California Institute of Abnormalities (C.I.A.). This is a-must-attend event for anyone with a hot button to push, who might like to break a story. Come Christmas the Clowns “cross the pond” for their first tour of Europe and Japan, where the band is anxiously being awaited as the real saviors of Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Their music itself is pure American Rock ‘N’ Roll, with its punk, Country and Western, rockabilly, surf, and let’s not forget, Blues and Gospel roots firmly intact. To hear their music and witness the Monsters of Mayhem themselves in concert footage and videos featuring their own unique brand of dopey humor, visit.

Ren and Stimpy meet the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns - February 7, 2010

Ren and Stimpy Artist Jim Smith and the Reach Around Rodeo Clowns along with Robert Rhine of Girls and Corpses magazine got together on 2/6/10 for a Jam session. By 1985 Nick was based out of Miami Fla. He was a member of roots-rock band The Preachers and toured the East Coast extensively, opening for many seminal alt-rock bands of the day, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, TSOL, X, Jason and the Nashville Scorchers, Tex and the Horseheads etc.

In 1987 Nick joined Miami blues stalwarts ‘IKO IKO’. Their 1st album ‘Snowstorm in the Jungle’ was released on Kingsnake Records.

It seams the Clowns are in the book, Yodel-ay-ee-oooo: The Secret History Of Yodeling Around The World- Page 295. For those who have not heard our music, we have been known to yodel now and then. Here part of the review:
This month we came across a killer psychobilly band known as the The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns. This band is hotter than a two dollar hooker on Saturday night. With a traditional psychobilly sound laced with a souped up modern sound the Rodeo Clowns make the Twisted Hillbilly list of favorites. So kick back, sip some shine, grab your girl and prepare to have your brain warped to the Twisted Killer Sound of The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns.

A review of the Clowns at Dobbs 11/26/08 - November 28, 2008

Wednesday,November,26th,2008 was a great night in downtown Philthadelphia,Pa. @ J.C. Dobbs club 304 South Street.
1. J.C.Dobbs
Wait, rewind 30 minutes...Gary and I did make our usual trek for steak sandwiches. Gary wanted Geno's,I cried like a bitch for Pat's...so Pat's it was. Btw...Gary's parking skills are off the hook. Everytime we go to this spot,Gary get's us right to the sidewalk and I did freeze my ass off for Pat's too!
Anywayz.......
I generally don't write reviews on shows because it has to be one hell of a show for me to be inspired to write of. Well, last night was such a night. Myself and best friend Gary made the journey to see some long time friends,Quentin and Wendell Jones...The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns.
Years ago, When I was in the hardcore band,Somber, here in Lancaster,Pa. We did a show with Quentin and Wendell at a little club called "The Uptown Comedy Club" (the original Chamaeleon Club birth home),which eventually burned down, from the inside out. R.I.P. Great times their.
As Gary and I made our way to the front door of the J.C.Dobbs club, their stood Quentin on the walk enjoying the Philthy night life of South Street. We shook hands and shared some memorable moments of times past. I couldn't remember the original name of his band when we did a show together long ago and Quentin was kind enough to refresh my memory of the original name of "The Rockabilly Brothers". Awesome!!!
Wendell arrived to his own personal parking spot in front of the club and it was great to see he still has a great sense of humor.
The club...J.C. Dobbs.
Lets enter,shall we?
Small...dark...no smoking and 2 kegs of beer, all you can drink for $10 bucks!!!
As the staff were getting things set up,I met two wonderful girls from Australia that were only in the country for 4 hours!!! Their names (hold on)...Larry and Tanzia. Yes,the girl's name was Larry (and she was in her pajama's)and she was gorgeous. I remember them both staring, pondering, gazing and motioning at me,when Gary and I were hanging outside. The girls looked at me like I was a bad science project gone even worse,but...I get that a lot. So I took no offense. As we introduced ourselves later inside and said cheers to a piss warm Pabst from an over pumped keg,(For the record. I don't care who you are and how much "Pabst" you can drink. It is impossible to get drunk off that rat snot),Larry was intrigued to snap a picture of my neck. She was told that once in Philadelphia, that she would meet someone with a tattoo on their neck, and low and behold...their I was. :>)

The crowd was filling in full of some very nice folks that we're themselves. Rockers, greasers and rockabilly babies.
First up...Laurie Radzniak. A very pretty rockabilly/country solo performer that had a voice that bared a striking remembrance of Patsy Cline and lead singer of Mazzy Star,Hope Sandoval. Laurie and her acoustic guitar even covered a Patsy Cline tune (which I forget the title of) and even better. She covered Kitty Wells,"Making Believe". Which she did incredibly good!!!
Kitty Wells - Making Believe

I got to talking with Laurie after her performance and she is such a very humble person. She was shaking in fear and was so nervous AFTER her performance. I reassured her that she did great and everyone loved her performance. She was grateful and later she found me to bid her goodbyes for the evening. If anyone knows where I can contact Laurie, please, hook me up with any contact info on her. I neglected to do this myself, duh. Star struck I guess. I know she lives in Jersey, thats all I know. So help a brutha out! :>)

Next up...burlesque dancer,Miss Mae. Which reminded me of a very heavily tattoo'd,Kelly Osbourne. She came out to a rather blinding light show and had her booby tassels bearing the evening chill. Hahahaha....interesting to say the least.
By the end of her performance, the place was full. Wall to wall, front to back. Soundcheck for the band took a few minutes then away they blasted. Full on,hi-fi rockabilly energy at it's best. Loud (I mean, very clearly, but fucking LOUD show)!!!
Clowns Drummer Dave Farerra has got to be one of the hardest hitting and most talented drummers I have seen in a very long time. He didn't hit em hard cause he was madman,he hit em hard cause he was fucking good and earned his right to do so!
"The Clowns" had a new bassist (from what I understand this was her first show with the band),and for the life of me. I forgot her name. Very...very talented girl. On a stand up,fretless bass that was literally twice the size of her. During the course of their performance, she climbed atop of it and rocked it through the entire length of a complete song. She even did a little dance number on top of the monster bass. The girl definitely had her own balance and chops..no doubt. she played good, she played proud and didn't miss all night!
Wendell was in his true form and not only did he give a great show, his humor is uncanning during the show. Wearing his beloved "16" shirt,he made sure that their wasn't a moment to be missed.
Quentin...what can I say. If you've never seen a true guitar genius, then you need to make your way to see Quentin shred! I mean...SHRED! Just mind blowing of his talent on the guitar. I couldn't help but lose my voice shouting during is leads and fine, fine finger work. I'm not sure what type of amp Quentin plays through, but he definitely earmarked that classic rockabilly guitar tone.
The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns ripped through a long set of some long time classics of theirs. Such as "Mexico","Beaver" and "Bad Dudes A Surfin". (and yes I was singing along to all of 'em too) and they belted out some very, very cool rockin new tunes. Like "You Love Jesus,I Love Satan". The new songs are definitely in true Clown form.
It didn't take but 2 songs into their set, when the rug cutters stepped in and tore up the dance floor. Some young cats and their girls literally danced their asses of to such dances as The Lindy and some great Swing dance moves. I thought for sure the one guy was gonna spin his girl straight through the floor like a fuckin drill. He was tossing her around pretty good, but she held her own and was right their with him the whole time, rockin her ass off as well.
The Clowns also did some great renditions of some classic rocks songs as well.
Quentin, played lovingly (to his wife,Caroline, which was present and rockin all night with the crowd). Quentin played a classic guitar tune, written and recorded by brothers Santo and Johnny Farina. The song: "Sleep Walk". Which he did superbly.

The Clowns also played a great song by their friend Robert Gordon and the song - "The Way I Walk".
They also covered Elvis' "Little Sister" and did a great job at both songs.

For surely, the band also ripped through their hit song "Girl From Hell",that Stray Cat bassist Lee Rocker covered.

Oh,and not a 1 song encore...the Clowns charmed us all with a hot blooded 3 song encore!!! Schweeeetness!

All in all...if you were not at this show...your loss! As it was incredible in my humble opinion. But...don't fear. The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns and Quentin (The Comancheros) do have some upcoming shows, that you should make an effort to go see.

Please,by all means, check their page for their schedule!!!

Pictures of last night. I will post as soon as Gary get's em uploaded to his hard drive. So,Patience. Gary deserves time off too! :>)

A little help if you will. Quentin and I were chatting and Quentin needs some help with a project he'd like to do.
To somehow rip some relic "VHS" footage to some other format so he can upload it on Youtube.
I am not that knowledgeable in doing such a task. (I can barely turn my VCR on,that hasn't been used in almost 10 years). ;>P
If you have any clues on how this can be done, please contact Quentin Jones via his Myspace page and title the header as "VHS Conversion".

If I'm mistaken in any of the nights events...blame it on the Pabst!!! No I wan't drunk, but I was just too busy trying,to no avail! :>)

Review Sept 08 Rodeo Clown Shows - September 17, 2008

To those who were in attendance , recovery will be slow but certain. Sensation will return.

To those who did not attend any of the dates during the RARC swing through Pennsylvania :Philly ( JC Dobbs ) - Allentown ( Grumpy's ) , & York ( Smalls ) , YOU missed an opportunity to be fully enveloped in
a true R&R extravaganza ..
The guys hit the track like they never made a pit stop. Wendell , Quentin , Dave , & Bradley dispensed
a merciless mix of Clown Classics and Fresh Cuts to keep the crowds buzzed and bouncing !
From the opening note to the final hum of feedback The Clowns stated in no uncertain terms that only they can deliver that pulse shattering punch.

What the "Clowns have been up to! - July 4, 2008

Since 2002, the Rodeo Clowns have been dealing with shit storms but, they have been writing and doing the odd gig here or there. Since then, there have been 3 new wives and 5 divorces, our last label went under, trucks lost, one dog put to sleep, one band member missing, a new guy to replace him who went off to jail, and too much more to list. But the worst of all, Wendell and Quentin lost a close family member.
Three years ago Dave, Wendell and Quentin started a new CD but it took a long time to put it all together. We are now, and have been for the past five months, working on completing this project. There is a new upright player joining us, who's name will be released soon, and we are planning a series of life dates in the near future.
Very soon we will be releasing live footage of the band and our Major Motion Picture, "The Clown Remains The Same"

There have been three key people in getting the Rodeo Clowns back in the studio and in front of audiences, Quentin’s wife Caroline, who pushed until she got us all together, Steve Patton who believed in the projects, and Jay Sorrentino, who is helping with the recording of the new CD.
As of Summer 08 we are setting up a few show for the fall. In Sept, we will be playing J. C. Dobbs in Philly Pa on9/11 and York Pa on 9/13. We will be adding a few more shows around that time, and we will be planing more shows for 2009.

We are finishing up the vocals and bass tracks on what looks to be a 19 song cd. These tracks are being recorded in Lanark’s Studio using the Sanco 500 process for that “Lanark” sound. It looks like at best we will be mixing and mastering the new project at the end of summer. When we start mixing we will set a release date.

We are adding new content to our site every day, so keep checking them and get someone else to do the same. Don’t for get to join the e mail list!
